Historical Restoration and Repair

Before 1900, over sixty stained  glass businesses were listed in the city directories.  Today, none of those studios exist, and little is known about them (see "History of Stained Glass", The Stained Glass Association of America)  except for the legacy of leaded and stained glass their craftsmen created and installed in area buildings, homes, and other  structures.

Artifex Studio works with that legacy, utilizing the skills, methods, and techniques required for the safe removal, repair, and handling of leaded and stained architectural glass windows and panels.

We generally perform all restoration and repair work ourselves.  We do not generally contract work offsite to others.

All work proceeds on the basis of detailed contracts stating specific work to be performed, materials and methods to be utilized, and the complete cost for the finished project.

Techniques for preserving leaded and stained architectural glass windows and panels are continually being researched and updated.  We work to keep abreast of these developments, and use those materials and techniques that are currently best able to preserve the historic integrity of the windows and panels, while maintaining them for current use.

For additional reading on the restoration of stained glass windows and panels:

Preserving the Heritage of Stained Glass - with proper stewardship, a stained glass window is one of the ecclesiastic arts that can last through the centuries to inspire faith.

Custom Commissions/New Design

Artifex Studio works with our clients to clearly define their goals for each window or panel installation.  We do this by:

bulletAssessing the location's architectural, aesthetic, and lighting considerations
bulletWorking with our clients to determine their color and design preferences
bulletProviding preliminary design reviews
bulletEnsuring client satisfaction with the finished product throughout the installation process.

Conservation

Upon request, Artifex Studio will perform an inspection of existing leaded and stained glass architectural window or panel installations.  We will provide written reports of their current condition as well as their replacement and/or market value.

We will also provide photographic documentation for insurance purposes.

Protection Glazing and Related Services

Weathering and random vandalism can damage the priceless treasure of your leaded and stained glass windows or panels.  Artifex Studios can design a UV-rated Lexan (or manufacturer equivalent) or laminated glass exterior protection system, which is then installed by our craftsmen.

The lack of inclusion of proper airflow ventilation in an installed protection system leads to the premature aging and destruction of leaded and stained glass windows and panels, as well as the framing system surrounding them.   Our protection systems incorporate airflow ventilation which reduces heat build-up as well as preventing condensation problems.

We can also perform window frame repair and painting, as well as the construction and installation of custom extruded aluminum frames and ventilator windows.
